One recent and particularly difficult project was a family of stainless steel tubes between 250mm and 450mm diameter and 2 metres long machined from 316 stainless steel pipe. The task was to machine the inside and the outside of the pipe to a 2.5mm wall and achieve a tolerance of +/- 0.05mm. Discussions were held with the client on the right approach and risk management and the job was completed successfully. Furthermore, the client then welded flanges into position on the components and returned them to
Ashby for a final skim operation.
